No, unless it's to say good night back. Texting marathons need to end sometime, you know.

If I see it as it comes in, I generally say "Sweet dreams" or something pleasant and brief.

Otherwise I don't reply because I tend to take people at their word and I assume that they've either gone to sleep or turned off their phone. A reply would either be unwelcome or unnoticed.

Yes.  Always respond to a message.  It is rude when you don't.  UNLESS you do not like the person and never want to communicate with them again.  You say:  Goodnight.  There is etiquette even for a text message or an email.

Be ahead of others.  It is sexy.

Do whatever feels appropriate. I usually respond "goodnight :)" wherever someone says goodnight to me. Try not to respond to anything after that though since sometimes people just feel awkward being the last one to say something in a conversation. It's fine to leave things hanging a bit, so don't let people keep you up in a never ending battle to have the last word.

If I'm the first one to say it then when the other person replies, the conversation ends. If the other person says it first then I will say it in reply and the conversation will end. I feel it's a little rude not to acknowledge that someone has wished you a good night and equally so if you don't do so in return.

However, once that's done there's really nothing more to discuss because it amounts to the same thing as "Goodbye".

When I was a kid, we didn’t have this culture of wishing ‘Good Night’ at our home. The running around the home, the games, the hopping and jumping used to make us so exhausted that we used to fall asleep as soon as we hit the bed.

During school days, we started wishing Good Night to each other in the family and that continued to a really long time. Back then, it was a simple and formal wish which was reciprocated in the same simple and formal way.

Then one fine day, WhatsApp came into our lives. Then this started to happen:

And this:

And this as well:

Initially, very few people used to wish Good Night in this way so I tried to took it sportingly. I used to genuinely type Good Night and send it to the other person with a smiley.

But then my WhatsApp started getting flooded with Good Night messages like these:

Or

It started getting on my nerves. When the whole conversation could put to an end with a simple Good Night, people were making unnecessary efforts to make it as dramatic as possible. I felt it to be wrong to just type Good Night to such people so I applied my mother’s trick here. What she used to do with Diwali gifts, I started doing exactly the same with these messages. Exchange. Image message recieved from a person was sent to the other person.

But I lost my mind when I started getting messages like these:

Or

What a ridiculous way it was to wish someone a Good Night! The thing that you could say in just two freaking words, you were saying in a whole paragraph that too with so much gyaan in it.

These messages irritated me not only because I found them utterly useless but at the same time they were eating up all the space in my Gallery. It pissed me so much that I disabled Auto download in WhatsApp.

I don’t need Good Night wish from every Tom, Dick and Harry to have a peaceful and sound sleep.

Now, I wish Good Night and Good Morning only to those who matters to me.

It may be rude or harsh but that’s the truth.

:-)

It's just polite to respond, but it's entirely up to you, you can choose to or not, it's not mandatory.
